Year One at Aloha Sunday

One year ago today we opened our doors to you, an entirely inspiring and engaging community. Since that day we’ve been humbled and encouraged by every person we have crossed paths with. We’d like to say thank you to everyone that has set foot in our door and all the people that have carved out a bit of their day to traverse the pages of our site.

To celebrate our one year anniversary we’ll be hosting a pool party at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs over memorial day weekend (5/27/12). We’ll be posting more details in the near future, but we wanted to get the word out as rooms are disappearing quickly.

In the meantime here are a few highlights from the past year.

On Thursday 5/3/2012 we hosted an opening reception for There’s Salt in My Blood, There’s Salt in the Sea, a photography installation featuring works from James Tull, Eric Warner and Kevin Roche, that will be on display through the month of May. Thanks to Bottlecraft for the tasty beverages, Beth for the photos and everyone that came out that night.

Introducing Sean Woolsey: Maker, Craftsman & Artist

Sean Woolsey is a maker, a craftsman and an artist. Currently residing in Costa Mesa, California, Woolsey handcrafts one of a kind works that are made to last. Woolsey’s work is deeply influenced by Wabi Sabi, a Japanese philosophy centered on the acceptance of transience. He nurtures the notion that there is beauty in the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.

As exemplified in this short film, from our friends at The Process Creative, there is warmth and intent in every detail of Woolsey’s life. Sean has been an inspiration to all of us at Aloha Sunday and we’re excited to be introducing his lamps and coaster sets to our collection of home goods both in store and online.

“While I’ve been working in photography for almost a decade, it is within the last few years that I’ve really discovered my passion for film. Maybe it is nostalgia for the past, for a simpler time, but my explorations in film have really helped me explore the craft of photography. Old cameras that seem outdated still create beautiful images. Selection of film type and processing techniques also allow seemingly limitless possibility. I appreciate that my results are not manipulated on a computer screen; they come from my own two hands.” - Eric Warner

Based in Encinitas, California, Kevin Roche, is a portrait, lifestyle, and travel photographer who focuses on beach culture and the coastal lifestyle. His style, characterized by clean and vibrant imagery, is uniquely influenced by the tropics as well as Southern California. Kevin holds a BA in Visual Arts from the University of California, at San Diego and has shot for Surfer, Surfing, Transworld Surf, Tracks, On the Board, and The Surfer’s Path. – Kevin Roche

Introducing Black Veil Magazine

We’re proud to be featured in the premiere issue of Black Veil, a new quarterly zine exposing art + culture across all mediums.

“Our endeavor is to express that there are all kinds of life and ways to live. We give artists a medium to share their stories and to help rotate our never ending ideas,” says founder Trisha Difuntorum. Clicking on each square pulls up stories and insight into the minds of those who create.

Our favorites include Native-American photographer Irwin Lewis and San Diego based band Dead Feather Moon.

Portland Creativity at its Finest: Inside Shwood Shop

After spending a few days experimenting with nature, we headed back to Portland where Eric Singer gave us the tour of Shwood’s headquarters and most importantly his loft where all creative R&D begins. With an utter disregard to the usual and typical restrictions that hinder newness, it’s here that every Shwood product is conceptualized and prototypes are first born.
